Fishing report

The winds are dropping and it couldn't have come soon enough. After a period of some months with 25-30Knt winds every day, we are finally getting some weather that allows us to get out and do what we love most and that's fish!!
I am happy to report that the center cab got her fist marlin a few weeks back and it was yours truly that was on strike!!! With improved conditions and the small black season in full swing hopefully it will be the first of many.
Out on the reef the trout are definately on the bite with good catches being taken on most hires, drifting baits between the bomies does the trick but make sure that you stay alert because the trout will hit your bait and head for their reefy home just as fast as they can.
Having a floating pilly out the back for any spaniards that my be cruising the reef edges is always a good idea to.
The inshore wrecks are producing spotted and school mackerel as well as a few spaniards, if you want to stay closer to shore.

Fishing report

Now that the water temp is starting to drop the catches of trout are starting to heat up, the centre cab has been out on the reef pretty consistantly for the start of April with the weather being kind and the fishing gods also smiling.
Good catches of trout have been taken on most days with some quality makerel and spangled emperor thrown in as well as the normal sweetlip, stripies and perch.
As the south easterly winds take hold the estuaries provide the perfect place to get some fishing relief while its to messy to get outside. GT's and queenies frequent the estuary mouths in the cooler months and can prove to be great sport and sometimes unstoppable on lighter estuary gear. The runabout is a great fishing option when these circumstances present themselves.

Fishing Report

Well although all up here in far northern Queensland were busily preparing ourselves for the onslaught of cyclone Olga, she never really eventuated, it did however create a strong moonsoon weather pattern that hung around for a few weeks delivering heavy ran and poor conditions on the ocean for most of January. The odd good day here and there provided an opportunity to get out on the reef and get amongst it.
February so far has delivered some great weather with 15knts or less on most days making it a pleasure to be on the water, as far as the fishing goes the warm summer water has made the bottom fishing a bit slow, with water over the 30m mark being the key to scoring some trout or even a prized red, the sweetlip are in plague preportions on some of the reefs and getting a bait past them can become a real art, big live baits tend to keep them at bay, the only problem you have then is trying to stop whatever creature takes a liking to your livie!!! there are still a few Spaniards around as well, these can be picked up on the troll or with a floating rig, my favourite is definately trolling Xrap 20's or 30's early in the morning . February does bring with it the opening of the Barramundi season and slow trolling the rocky headlands with bibbed minnows can turn up a quality fish or two, the 4.5m polycraft runabout is a perfect boat for this type of fishing, with plenty of deck space for its size, an economical 40hp 4 stroke honda and rod holders in all the right positions a day trolling along the rock faces is a breeze.

Fishing Report

Well the weather up here for the past few weeks has been great, no wind and flat seas has seen most people heading out wide to the far reefs chasing the big one, with some striking it lucky, some really nice trout and good sized reds have been taken, the usual catches of mackerel have come on board as well as a few stories of the one that got away, includeing one of a very large mahi mahi being lost at the side of the boat. This time of year sees the trevally fire up and some solid GT's have been found with a few golden trevally and turrum thrown in as well. Fingers crossed the weather keeps smiling on us for January.

I hope that everyone had a merry Xmas and has a happy and safe new year.

See you in Sunny Cairns in 2010

Well the wind up here is a bit hit and miss at the moment with the boat ramps resembling the starting grid of a V8 race when the weather is good!
There are still a few spaniards around being taken on the troll and with floating pillies, also some nice catches of trout are coming over the side, the spear fishing boys have really been cashing in on the trout with nice catches in the last couple of weeks.
Out wide there have been a number of Wahoo taken recently and the Dollies have started to make a show as well.
Fingers crossed the weather gods smile on us in the coming weeks.

Boab Boat Hire Cairns - The Center Cabs maiden voyage!

Well the time finally arrived when I could get the big orange boat out and strech her legs, the weather looked good and with Anthony the GM of Boab Industries up here visiting all was set.
We launched from Yorkeys Knob ramp and set a course for oyster reef in sunny calm conditions, this quickly changed to a fresh sou'easter and some short sharp chop hitting us from the starboard side, 10 minutes further into the trip and we were confronted by a very dark and ominus looking sky that decided to open the flood gates directly over the top of us. The Amara center cab took it all in her stride and we punched through the other side to sunny skies and light breezes.
Only being a couple of miles off the reef the call was made to drop in a spread which included a couple of Rapala x-raps, a wog head and a jet head, to see if there where still any maks around, we had the answer about 2 minutes later with a double hook up on spaniards, I dropped mine while trying to clear the other lines, but Anthony boated his a nice fish of about 6kg. The lines went back out and after a short wait line started peeling off the long corner, the X-rap got the strike again, this time after some nice gaff work a spaniard of about 15kg hit the deck.
With more then enough mackerel on board we prospected around the numerous bombies and reefs untill a likely looking patch was found and the anchor was sent down, we spent the next 3 to 4 hours floating baits back, with all sorts of quality fish coming over the side including some nice coral trout. I was especially pleased when Anthony brought the first trout in as Sarah had placed her order for fresh trout for dinner before we had left.
As the day got on and there was talk of heading home, I decided to have a quick flick with a popper as the rugged broken country we where sitting in just screamed trevally. After a few fruitless casts the water behind my rooster popper exploded only for the fish to miss the hooks, one more blurp form the popper on I was on, after a short but spirited fight a nice bludger trevally was on board, not quite his cousin the GT but as anyone who has tangled with trevally will tell you they all make a good account of themselves..
We made our way back home through some small chop sitting on about 22 knots the whole way with the big 150hp honda never missing a beat.
With the varying weather conditions and some great fish hitting the deck it was a very fitting christening for Boabs newest Center Cab.

Boab Boat Hire Cairns is pleased to annouce it will commence operations from Oct 09. Initially the Cairns fleet will comprise of two vessels, being the 6m Amara center cab and the 4.5m Polycraft runabout

Cairns is a tropical paradise, with the Great Barrier Reef, one of the natural wonders of the world on her doorstep, and the Daintree rainforest a short drive to her north.

Cairns is the gateway to argueably the best diving and snorkeling in the world. With people coming from all corners of the globe to experience the wonder and colour that is the Great Barrier Reef.

Cairns also offers unparalleled fishing oportunities, either out on the reef trolling for Black Marlin, Mahi Mahi, Spanish Mackerel and yellowfin tuna, dropping a bottom rig down for one of our tasty reef fish like the Coral Trout and Red Emperor or perhaps casting lures around in Trinity Inlet or the Barron River for the elusive Barramundi or Mangrove Jack. If thats not enough throw some crab pots out and try for a feed of NQ mud crabs. Yum!!

Another feather in the cap for the Cairns area is Tinaroo dam. Located a short drive from Cairns on the Atherton tablelands, this fresh water dam is a great spot for families and fishermen alike. Swimming, skiing and fishing are some of the activities on offer at Tinaroo.
Did I mention that the world record Barramundi was caught here?

We look forward to helping you make the most of your boating experience.

See you in sunny Cairns.
